Dear Parents and Students,
Another busy productive week has drawn to a close. Although we are still finding our rhythm, we have achieved a great deal, including completing our first two tests for the year.
In the Classroom:
Maths
We have finished our first topic about numeration, and had a test on Wednesday. Thank you everyone, for returning the signed tests so promptly. We have already begun Topic 2, which focuses on adding and subtracting whole numbers. Once again, this will mostly be review of last year’s curriculum, but it is worthwhile to reinforce the skills we have learned in order to move on to the next level. We will review this topic on Monday the week after next, and then sit the test on the following Tuesday.
Literacy Workshop
We had our first Spelling test, and we read Grandfather's Journey. We spent some time working in our Reading Circles, and then we discussed our ideas and conclusions as a class. Drawing inferences from a story, and understanding new vocabulary by using context clues were two of the strategies we focused on, and everyone enjoyed some success implementing these strategies. Next week, we will continue our theme of Journeys when we read Akiak.
Science
We began our Earth Science unit with an introduction to the Mystery Science program, beginning with an investigation of a fossil bed found in Nebraska. We will continue to add to our predictions, hypotheses, and conclusions as we work through the unit. Next week, we will be focusing on volcanoes, and looking for patterns in their formation.
Social Studies
We spent some time studying latitude and longitude, and we are now complementing our study of landforms by creating descriptive postcards. Next week, we will turn our attention to climate; first by looking at the USA as a model, and then comparing it to the rest of the world.
