Dear Parents and Students,
It has been a shorter week, but we have achieved a great deal over the past four days.
In the Classroom:
Maths
We have spent the week working through Topic 4, which is dedicated to division. We have compared different methods and strategies used to divide, and acknowledged the properties of division, such as dividing by one, dividing a number by itself, and dividing zero by another number. We will review the topic on Monday, and the topic test will take place Tuesday.
Literacy Workshop
We spent most of the week reading Return to The Titanic. This was an interesting book that told two stories at once. One story was about the experiences of a survivor of the infamous tragedy, and the other was about the mission to find the wreck of the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean. We paid particular attention to the writer’s craft, and how each new chapter was introduced in a way that immediately engages the reader. Next week, we will begin our next story, Tomas and the Library Lady.
Science
We continued our investigations of Earth’s surface changes this week, including a practical lab assignment in which we modelled and observed the effects of weathering on mountains and rocks. Next week, we will apply our conclusions to our investigation into the Ashfall Fossil Beds, then explore how environments on Earth have changed over time.
Social Studies
We began the week learning about people and populations. We have also spent some time preparing for our upcoming minor presentation assignment about patriotism. Everyone has chosen a country to represent, and we will all enjoy learning from one another when we take turns to present our work. The presentations will take place on Thursday and Friday, 12th and 13th October. Next week, we will spend a little more time in class working on our Patriotic Symbols, and we will also be learning about the origins of democracy.
