Week 11

 Dear Parents and Students,

It was nice to have another week of cooler weather, in which we were very busy and productive as usual. Report cards for the first quarter were sent home on Wednesday. Please contact the school if you didn’t receive yours.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have finished Topic 6, which was a very short topic dedicated to algebra, and we held

the topic test on Friday. We will begin Topic 7 next week. This is another short topic that reviews and extends what we know about multiplication.

Literacy Workshop

This week, we spent more time in our Reading Circles, and our story of the week was

Boss of the Plains. The conversations and collaborative work are really beginning to develop, and each group is becoming less reliant on guided instruction. Next week, we will begin planning and drafting for our Narrative Story. This process will occupy the best part of the next two weeks, and we will finish the assignment with a publishing party on Friday, 10th November.

Science

We are in the midst of completing our Earth Science unit, and we are currently bringing  together all we have  learned about the slow and rapid changes of our planet’s surface. We finished the week with a practical demonstration and a peek at next week’s focus on the water cycle and water as a natural resource. As you are now all aware, our studies of Earth’s surface changes will incorporate our visit to the Taichung Earthquake Museum, which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 22nd November. Details about the trip will be made available soon.

Social Studies

We held our open-book chapter test on Thursday, and we will soon begin the next topic in our books, which will focus on the Northeast region of the United States of America. As we have done since the beginning of the year, we will use the USA as a model, and make

comparisons and contrasts between the USA and other parts of the world.

Other important information

Our Halloween/Dress up day will take place on Tuesday, and we welcome all parents, guardians and family members to join us for our parade and performances. Please note that in the event of poor weather, the performances will still take place in the auditorium.

The family fun continues on Wednesday with our Fun Day afternoon activities. Once again, families are welcome to join us for a special afternoon organised by Mr. Liu and the Grade 6 students.

Along with report cards, forms were sent home Wednesday to arrange parent/teacher interviews for the week beginning Monday, 6h November. If you haven’t done so already, please complete the form and return it as soon as possible. Please also try to list a number of available times in order of preference. I will do my best to accommodate everybody. Parents, I look forward to meeting you all then! In the meantime, have a restful weekend, and students, I’ll see you all again on Monday.
