Dear Parents and Students,
It’s been a chilly week, but it hasn’t deterred us from our work in the classroom. We’ve had a very busy week, including writing yet another creative narrative story, completing another Math unit, and designing chain-reaction machines as we learn about energy and force. We finished the week with our January assembly.
In the Classroom:
Maths
We had our Topic 11 test on Thursday, and we have begun Topic 12. This topic is dedicated to decimals, and we began the topic by learning to identify place value. We will continue with decimals next week, with the topic test to take place next Friday.
Literacy Workshop
After reading Heat Wave! last week and learning all about hyperbole, we have spent this
week planning, drafting, and publishing our own tall tales, complete with hyperbole,
exaggeration, and far-fetched accounts of true and made-up stories. We have also continued with learning about how to correctly use adjectives, including comparatives and superlatives.
Science
We have finished our work with Rube Goldberg machines for the time being, and we have
had a lot of fun designing chain-reactions and learning how to store, transfer, and release
energy. We will return to our explorations of energy transfer later in the year. Next week, we will review what we have learned so far in our unit dedicated to energy, and we will also discuss how to prepare for the Science Fair that will take place in April.
Social Studies
We spent the early part of the week learning about the geography and climate of the American Southeast. We also began our studies of the early people of the region. We will continue our investigations next week, including an introduction to the American Civil War.
