Week 24

Dear Parents and Students,

Chinese Week has been a lot of fun, and a great way to welcome the Lunar New Year. Thanks again to Ms Tsai and Ms Lin for all of the special activities throughout this week and last. We have enjoyed calligraphy lessons, Chinese cooking, cultural crafts, and activities, and we finished the week off with the Chinese-style day market. Thank you to Mr Ferreira and the Grade sixes for all of your work in running the market activities!

In the Classroom:

Maths

We completed our Benchmark and Cumulative tests this week, covering everything we have learned this year to date. We finished the week in Math trying our hand at tangrams (七巧板) - the Chinese geometric puzzles. After the break, we will begin Topic 13, which continues our study of decimals, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication of decimals and whole numbers.

Literacy Workshop

To continue the theme of Chinese Week, we finished reading The Last Dragon in class. We have also been reviewing our study of adjectives, and we have now completed that unit of grammar. After the break, in the weeks leading up to Literacy Week, we will finish revising and publishing our Book Review project.

Science

We have been discussing Science Fair topics in class and how to begin planning our

preliminary research. We will make final decisions after the break. We have also enjoyed more practical experimentation this week, with our Science Mystery challenging us to design and create a flashlight.

Social Studies

We have completed our studies of Ports of the Southeast, and we reviewed the chapter

this week. After the break, we will learn what the Southeast is like today, with our attention focused on the Atlantic States.
