Week 26

 Dear Parents and Students,

Despite  the changeable weather, the Literacy Week activities have made it a week to remember. We have enjoyed all kinds of activities. We had our various dress-up days and the Caves book sale, we watched the Grade 6 Readers Theatre performances, and then we finished the week by performing our own Readers Theatre to Grade 3, ahead of the monthly assembly.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have completed Topic 13, and had our topic test on Thursday. We have already begun Topic 14, which is a change of pace, as it is dedicated to the study of perimeter and area. We will continue with Topic 14 next week.

Literacy Workshop

Much of our week was dedicated to our Book Promotion project, with our presentations taking place on Thursday. We also read a biography of Gloria Estefan this week, and discussed why she might be considered a hero. Next week, we begin our next writing project: Writing Instructions.

Science

We have almost completed our study of electricity, and next week we will be reviewing all we have learned. We are still in the preliminary stages of our Science Fair projects, and we held conferences on Thursday to discuss our progress.

Social Studies

As part of our Literacy Week activities, we read about Anyokah, a six-year-old Native

American girl. Along with her father, Sequoya, she created an alphabet for her native

Cherokee language. We also earned to read a map scale, and we have begun reading

about and discussing the Gulf Coast States. These have proven to be significantly different to the Northeast States in many ways, and we have been comparing and contrasting the different regions. Next week, we will be making further comparisons as we learn about the inland states of the region. We will then review the entire unit ahead of the open book test that will take place on Thursday.
