Dear Parents and Students,
Spirit Week has brought a lot of energy, and we have been very lucky with the weather. It has been so much fun to see everyone dressing up in the various themes throughout the week. Thank you to all parents who spent time and talent designing costumes, bandages, and even make-up! Photos taken throughout the week can be found via the link at the end of this post.
In the Classroom:
Maths
We have completed Topic 14, and our test took place on Thursday. We have already begun Topic 15, and we have spent the last few lessons studying solid figures, including cutting out our own geometric nets and building three-dimensional shapes. This is a short topic, and the test will take place next Thursday.
Literacy Workshop
We finished writing our instructions this week, and we are preparing to present them next Tuesday. On Monday, we began reading Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and we are already five chapters in. Some of the discussions arising from our Reading Circles are quite fascinating, as everybody has their own interpretation of the story, and we are enjoying sharing one-another’s perspectives, inferences, and insights. We will continue reading the story throughout next week.
Science
We have been exploring thermal energy this week, and we built spinners to demonstrate how heat and hot air rises. We then explored how this principle is applied to develop heat engines, and led to the invention of steam engines and internal combustion engines. Science Fair projects are beginning to take shape, as we establish our hypotheses and finalise our planning for experimentation. Regular conferences each week will be held to make sure everyone is on track.
Social Studies
We have begun studying America’s Midwest, beginning with its geography, and with a focus on summarizing expository text. We are developing our skills in efficient skimming,
scanning, and summarizing information in books and online, as we learn about the climate, resources, and physical features of the Great Lakes States and the Plains States of the USA. Next week, we will continue to practise our skills as we study the early history of the region.
Other important information
We finished this week by celebrating the birthdays of Liam, Hana, Charlie, Suzie, and Phoebe. Next week will be a ‘regular’ week, and clubs will take place as usual on Monday and Wednesday. The International Expo – presented by grades 1, 3, and 5 – will take place the following Thursday, 28th March.
Enjoy your weekend, and I'll see you all on Monday!
