Week 29

 Dear Parents and Students,

We had a ‘regular’ week this week, but it has been a busy one. We have given oral presentations, begun a new unit in grammar, and yet another topic in Math. I think everyone will have thoroughly deserved a vacation when we reach the Spring Break in a week’s time from now.

In the Classroom:

Maths

We have completed Topic 15, and our test took place on Thursday. We have already begun Topic 16, which is dedicated to measurements, time, and temperature. We have started with customary units of length, and we will continue next week with weight and capacity, before comparing it all to the metric system.

Literacy Workshop

We completed our Writing Instructions assignment this week, and enjoyed watching one

another’s instructional presentations on Tuesday and Thursday. We also began a new unit in Grammar, this time dedicated to capitalisation and punctuation. We will continue with this unit for the next few weeks. We have continued with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and the discussions from our Reading Circles continue to inspire. We have a very busy week next week, as we will finish the story, and celebrate on Friday with a Mad Tea Party. We will also work towards a creative representation of our favourite part of the tale. This may come in the form of a drawing or painting, a model, a poem or song, a game, or any other creative form.

Science

We enjoyed more practical experiments this week as we investigated how sound waves

are created and how they travel. Our study of sound continues next week, and then after the Spring Break, we will begin to experiment with light. We have had our regular Science Fair conferences, and everyone’s projects seem to be going very well.

Social Studies

Our studies of the American Midwest continue, and we have been further developing our expository reading, note-taking, and summarizing skills. We have been learning about the early history of the Great Plains region, and we spent some time comparing historical maps dating back as early as 1803. Our study of the Midwest will continue next week.
